PESQUERA DIAMANTE and WWF-Peru join forces to protect marine megafauna by promoting best practices towards sustainable fishing

22 de Diciembre del 2021

  • Alliance that will improve the monitoring and mitigation of incidental fishing, encompassing areas of scientific and technological research that support decision-making for the ordering, management and conservation of hydrobiological resources and marine megafauna.

Our sea is characterized by hosting an incredible marine megafauna such as turtles, cetaceans, seabirds, among others. Likewise, it is important to mention that bycatch occurs frequently because their habitats coincide with areas where fishing is carried out.

It is key to ensure fisheries sustainability, minimize the impacts that industrial fisheries have on the marine ecosystem and thus maintain the health of people and the marine ecosystem. Due to this, WWF-Peru and Pesquera Diamante signed the Framework Agreement for Inter-institutional Cooperation, with a duration of two years, which will allow to improve and guarantee the conservation of such an important resource as the anchovy.

"This alliance shows the efforts being made by various entities of the fishing sector to guarantee the conservation of marine species that interact with the anchovy fishery in a casual way, especially those protected such as seabirds, sea turtles and minor cetaceans," he said. Shaleyla Kelez, WWF Peru Wildlife Program Specialist.

This agreement will also strengthen the work that Diamante has been doing with respect to the conservation of marine megafauna, because WWF Peru will provide technical support so that its fishing fleet can implement good monitoring and mitigation practices in the incidental capture of these species. Monitoring and mitigation of incidental fishing will be improved, encompassing areas of scientific and technological research that support decision-making for the ordering, management and conservation of hydrobiological resources and marine megafauna.

“Pesquera Diamante and WWF Peru will work together to strengthen the already created program called Guardamares, they have been working to safeguard marine species. In this way, this agreement is focused on continuing to improve good practices for monitoring and mitigating incidental capture of marine megafauna, integrating the use of new technologies, training in techniques for handling and releasing species and raising awareness among our crew ”, said Pablo Trapunsky, General Manager of Pesquera Diamante.

Actually, international markets are also changing and pointing towards sustainability, some require that resources, such as anchovy, come from a sustainable fishery. Today more than ever, it is relevant to promote collaboration between various public and private institutions in the fishing sector, thus achieving greater economic and social benefits from the sea for all Peruvians.
